FIRESIDE CHAT: LAST CALL WITH

BADAL & MCINNIS

Last Call With Sharon and Kathleen V2.jpg

Sharon Badal (Tribeca) and Kathleen McInnis (Aspen, Toronto, Palm Springs) serve up all you need to know about thriving (and surviving) on the film festival circuit. Whether you take it straight up or on the rocks, these two short film mavens will deliver bracing and practical insider information.

Bios:

SHARON BADAL is vice president of filmmaker relations and shorts programming for Tribeca. She has been with the festival since its inception in 2001 and has produced special projects for Tribeca since 1999.

Her first job at age 14 as an usher in her father’s suburban movie theatre was where she fell in love with “the movies.” Since that rather inauspicious start she has produced numerous live-events, worked in distribution and marketing for three major studios and, since 1994, has been on the faculty at New York University Tisch School of the Arts Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. She teaches NYU’s “Producing in London” summer study abroad program and was integral in creating the producing minor. She is the author of “Swimming Upstream – A Lifesaving Guide to Short Film Distribution,” published by Focal Press. She has been a panelist/juror at numerous festivals and for industry organizations and works on many branded content initiatives with Tribeca Studios.

Sharon received her B.F.A in film & television production and her M.A. in cinema studies and business both from NYU.

A festival strategist/publicist with more than 25 years experience, KATHLEEN McINNIS employs long-range strategic planning and targeted publicity to help emerging world-cinema filmmakers cultivate new audiences and launch careers from the global film festival circuit platform.

Under her company banner See-Through Films, Kathleen and her team design premiere publicity campaigns to ensure the films, and filmmakers, reach their goals.

Previously Director of Programming at Aspen Shortsfest, International Short Cuts Programmer at Toronto Int'l Film Festival and Festival Director at Palm Springs ShortsFest, Kathleen is currently the Curator of Seattle International Film Festival’s New Works-in-Progress Forum for Documentary and Narrative Features.

Kathleen also has served as a festival strategist and project development mentor at BAL Labs (Buenos Aries Labs), Hot Docs International Film Festival (Canada), Koszalin Film Festival for Debut Filmmakers (Poland), CineMart (International Film Festival Rotterdam), Galway Film Fleadh (Ireland), and at Berlinale Talents during the Berlin Film Festival. Kathleen has presented keynotes at Winterthur International ShortFilm Festival (Switzerland) and Kreativni Evropa-Media’s Intelligent Audience Design (Czech), and has been on been on festival juries at the Norwegian Short Film Festival, Galway Film Fleadh, Seattle International Film Festival, Winterthur Film Festival, SXSW, Indie Lisboa and Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival.

Event Overview

One of the single most asked questions in the world of filmmaking is “How do I finance my film?” and for good reason. With all the exciting tools and platforms available to create and distribute content today, financing a short or feature film continues to be a challenge for filmmakers in today’s strained economy. Even foreign money sources are compromised and according to a recent article in The Hollywood Reporter, "China is an expanding source of financing, but as the Chinese government puts a hold on money leaving the country, studios...are left in the lurch". Our expert panel will discuss current factors at play and tips & strategies to help prepare today’s filmmakers for the ever-changing world of film financing.
